I need to investigate if there are alternative ways to dragon center to control fan and performance profiles, because clearly dragon center cannot be trusted to function. Either way, I'm now terrified of dragon center AND windows updates, which is not a tenable situation. That's not what happened to me, but perhaps windows updates break the UPDATED dragon center but not the factory installed version. In addition, another commentor said it was Windows update which broke his dragon center. So now, my machine is working but I'm terrified to update dragon center.

In particular there's a "meeting" profile which does the trick. With the factory version of dragon center it is working. Anyway, after the recovery I again ran all windows updates (but not 1903) and this time I did NOT update dragon center. The ONLY reason I considered this option was because the machine was new, I had only just finished setup, and hadn't installed any games or programs yet. It will overwrite your C drive completely. It actually uses a recovery partition on the drive to restore the factory image. One of them is troubleshooting and there should be an option to factory restore MSI. Reboot and keep pressing F3 on reboot and you'll get to a blue screen with options. No solution was offered so I did a factory restore on the PC. In the windows event logs I can see it complaining about KERNELBASE.DLL which I googled and this has happened before in the last few years, with dragon center but also with unrelated apps. Then I decided to update dragon center to the latest version from the MSI website, and this broke dragon center. Took it out of box, ran all windows updates (but not the 1903 feature update). This happened to me this week with almost the same model as you (I have the 478 from Best buy).
